Shiralee Darley, South African born, fully qualified in Interior Design heads up Darley Interior Architectural Design (DIAD) – an internationally experienced team of innovative and dynamic
Designers.

 

Shiralee, at the onset of her career gained experience in Retail Design working for one of South Africa’s leading Architectural firms – this extended on her Interior Design background by adding Architectural experience. In 1991, she followed her yearn for Leisure and Hospitality Design and became a key leader in raising the bar for South African Hospitality Design.

 

Under the name of the top international company, Wilson Associates, she established an office and team of Designers who initially focused on new Hotel and Resorts in Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands. These include, amongst others, Sugar Beach Resort and Le Telfair Resort – both in Mauritius as well as Zimbali Forest Lodge in Kwazulu Natal and The Royal Livingstone Resort – Zambia, Tsogo Sun’s Intercontinental Palazzo Hotel and Oliver Tambo Airport Intercontinental Hotel.


Shiralee also successfully secured the award for the luxurious redesign of the Blue Train, one of South Africa’s tourism icons. Ambitiously expanding her business opportunities, Shiralee negotiated hotel projects in the UAE, successfully securing and completing signature hotels including the One and Only Royal Mirage Hotels – Dubai, Park Hyatt Hotel – Dubai Creek, as well as the Shangri-La Hotel – Abu Dhabi.


In 2009, DIAD secured the commission for the Emirates First & Business Class Lounges for the new Dubai International A380 Concourse and her Design Teams Portfolio extended to Airport Design.

Leon has more than 12-years experience in consulting across Africa. The core focus of the consulting was to assess infrastructure and maintenance projects in South Africa and to implement successful methodologies to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery. This experience highlighted the importance of adopting a BIM culture and the results it could yield if implemented correctly. For the last 5 years Leon gained experience in the CAD software world and he recently helped launch a new company to support SMME’s with adopting a successful BIM process.

Nicholas is both strategic and hands on project BIM Coordinator, with experience working in an Architectural and Structural reference with 24 years behind him, consulting, designing, implementing and training Engineering and Architectural Teams and organisations while being a director in the African Autodesk Technical AEC Channel for 11 years. Nicholas has worked on a wide range of Architectural, Structural Industrial and MEP projects, both as Principal, Senior Technologist and Lead Standards Creation, IPD (Integrated Projects Delivery) Manager, BIM Manager or Digital Engineering Lead and as such has significant insight and value of understanding the project and disciplines as a whole and in their individual disciplines and putting together systems and BIM Deliverables.

 

He has been a Technical Director in the Autodesk African Channel and part of the development team, developing online Revit take-off and other 3rd party cloud based and VR applications.

 

It is essentially important that the right mix and levels of people are brought in early on and at various stages of these projects, trained where necessary and briefed to all coherently deliver fully integrated and coordinated projects in a timeous manor where teams are no longer working as isolated Silos but integrating their rich project data in a central rich and live repository known as a BIG BIM Model with its related datasets. This is achieved by having like-minded people having an attitude to work together, learn and share knowledge and skills openly. Nicholas has been trained in Architecture and Business Management, Accounting, Sales & Negotiations, Autodesk products and BIM solutions and together with his vast IT background in systems Engineering, professional Autodesk training and experience in project deliveries, Sales management, Cad software, implementation and creation of protocols and standards, it allows him to better understand and find solutions to the various complexities involved in the AEC BIM Integrated Design Environment across all disciplines. Janine Strachan

BIM Manager at DSA Architects

Janine specializes in identifying best practices and methodologies for integrating BIM into everyday workflows. She develops and oversees the BIM/Revit Workflows and Standards at DSA Architects. Her role as BIM Manager includes continuous staff development, user and project based support, maintaining the DSA Revit template and family libraries and overseeing the implementation of BIM workflows on projects.

Skilled in emerging software/application options forming the future of BIM, Janine is a proven leader in the best practices and methodology for integrating technology into everyday workflows for the AEC industry.

Starting with (3D) coordination to generating (4D) schedules and (5D) quantities from models, Janine has delved deep into the BIM process. In addition, she’s had the opportunity to share this knowledge with audiences and publications across South Africa as a speaker at the 3rd Building Information Modelling in Africa Conference 2018. Janine spoke about “Learning on the job – BIM is the way, but how?”, a presentation which resonated with delegates. Janine’s article, “Learning BIM on the job”, was published in the June 2018 issue of PositionIT Magazine.

Andrew McLachlan

Senior Vice President Development, Sub Saharan Africa - Radisson HotelGroup

A South African national, McLachlan is based at Radisson Hotel Group’s Africa Regional Support Office in Cape Town, South Africa. Andrew is responsible for growing the company’s dynamic portfolio of hotels and brands in Africa and the Indian Ocean.


Andrew’s career in the hotel industry started in 1990 before being formally enrolled in an in-house Hotel Management programme with Protea Hotels. In 1994 he won the Hotel Graduate of the Year Award in South Africa and held various management positions and by 1997 he proudly took over the challenging task of a hotel General Manager at a Protea Hotel in Johannesburg. In 1999, he moved on to the position of Protea Hotels Group Brand Communications Manager and in 2002 set his foot into the development world as Protea Hotels Special Projects Manager.

In December 2006, Andrew joined Radisson as Director Business Development and was promoted to Senior Director and Vice President and thereafter Senior Vice President Business Development in May 2016. He established the group’s presence in the region through a dedicated development office in Cape Town and is now spearheading Radisson Hotel Group’s growth strategies in this important emerging market.

Within the last two years Radisson Hotel Group has opened a new hotel in Africa every 45 days and signed a new hotel deal every 37 days. Today Radisson Blu and Park Inn by Radisson features in thetop 10 hotel brands in Africa when ranked by the number of hotels according to the study prepared by W-Hospitality.

Muddy is a Director of iJenga Ventures Ltd, an integrated real estate developer of affordable housing, healthcare, hospitality & industrial real estate since March 2018. He also serves as Managing Director of Urban Nirvana Property Solutions Ltd., a family office, and two other property holding companies since 2014. Among his philanthropic causes, Muddy is Board Treasurer of the Kenya Green Building Society and Board Chair of Africa Yoga Project.
 
His professional career between 1990 and 2013 spanned four years of audit & advisory practice at Price Waterhouse in Toronto, Canada. Following this, he did 11 different roles over 19 years at the global investment bank J.P. Morgan in Canada, the UK, the US, Russia, Central & Eastern Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America.
 
He earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation through the California Board of Accountancy in San Diego, CA, USA in 1996, prior to which he earned his Bachelor of Commerce at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1990 with a concentration in Finance & Accountancy. Sue Chi is the Supply Chain Management & Procurement Lead for South Asia within JLL’s Integrated Facilities Management team. She works closely with the Senior Executive leadership of IFM to ensure procurement strategies align with firm’s wider business strategy. She develops and executes governance frameworks to control and govern procurement & contract management activities performed by account teams. In her role, Sue Chi also collaborates with account teams to ensure compliance with key procurement strategies and standards and participates in pricing exercises in line with new business tenders to understand client’s requirements. She currently leads a team over 10 managers in South Asia to develop regional sourcing plan and savings initiatives, champion compliance and execute multi-accounts tenders in support of stakeholder’s expectations. Sue Chi is a critical driving force in leading the Procurement team to drive corporate agreements negotiations with annual vendor spend in excess of USD 150million, resulting in significant dollar savings to our clients.


She brings with her extensive experience and strong background in vendor management, contract management and strategic sourcing regionally and locally. She is also adaptable to matrix organizations, cross-functional teams and adept in stakeholder management. Sue Chi is an excellent communicator with proven leadership in building and maintaining strong cross-cultural business relationships, and in collaborating with high-profile international clients. On top of her current role, Sue Chi continues to hold the executive ownership of Regional Procurement Transition. With over 30 years hospitality experience, Ian has worked throughout Asia as well as the USA and UK with luxury international hotel groups Hyatt, Renaissance / New World Shangri-La and Lanson Place in various F&B, operational, general manager and specialist corporate roles.

Ian was instrumental in establishing a new spa brand CHI and relaunch of fitness concept Kerry Sports with Shangri-La prior to his appointment in 2009 as a Director of Projects for the Group.

Ian joined Dusit International in 2015 as VP Technical Services. The Group is undergoing rapid expansion with over 30 active projects and a strong pipeline in development. The TS team he leads in Bangkok, Manila and Dubai are responsible for new build hotels and renovations, from initial concept and design standards, development and innovation, technical services coordination with hotel operations, designers,
consultants, site project management and pre-opening ownership relations.

Carl Almeida

Bangkok, September 2019: Carl Almeida, is an Indian born Australian, residing in Bangkok for the past 18 years, where he is a partner at P49 Deesign, an international design company specializing in interior design for hospitality projects. P49 Deesign, established over 30 years ago, is the largest specialist interior design firm in Thailand with a team of 150 working on numerous hospitality projects worldwide in regions across China, India, Australia, Asia, the Middle East and Africa and in places as far as Switzerland, and Tahiti. Carl graduated with dual degrees of Bachelor of Architectural Studies and Bachelor of Architecture, both from the University of Adelaide, South Australia. He had been practising Architecture and Interior Architecture for 14 years previously in Australia, and now 18 years in Thailand focusing solely on interior design. At P49 Deesign, Carl is responsible for creative direction, business development and overall execution of hospitality projects in numerous countries throughout the world including China, India, Bhutan, Turkey, Egypt, Maldives, Indonesia, Malaysia, Oman, Tahiti and of course Thailand to name a few. Micael Raphael

Cheif Procurement Officer - Asia Pacific, JLL

Manages the sourcing and procurement for JLL’s clients and indirect spend in Asia Pacific with spend under management for Integrated Facilities Management (IFM) and Project & Development Services (PDS) in excess of USD7 billion. Leading a team of 226 procurement professionals in the region who in 2017 will deliver sourcing activities in excess of USD700 million.
 
Michael also manages the Vendor Service Centre, based in Manila, that supports JLL globally in areas such as contract management, supplier performance management, electronic RFP creation and procurement reporting. In addition to this, he is also a member of the JLL global procurement leadership team.
 
With 30 years of sourcing experience, Michael has worked with a number of global multinationals. His three most recent roles were greenfield opportunities where he created and developed the procurement function. He has been based in Asia for 11 years.
 
He previously led the procurement function for the largest listed property trust in the world, as well as running indirect sourcing for Australia’s premier department store. Whilst with the department store he rolled out 7 new stores in 5 years, delivering all the “back of house” requirements in the 24 hours from handover of the construction site to the start of the delivery of stock to fill the store.
 
During his time at a global pharmaceutical company he worked on the ground in 72 countries whilst creating a new sourcing business to manage their promotional materials. He employed the team of 8 people, developed and managed the supply base as well as internally selling the opportunity to marketing and sales divisions around the world. This opportunity managed $70 million in spend across all divisions, delivering in excess of 80% savings in years 1 & 2.
 
Prior to JLL he was Managing Director of the Hong Kong division of a US promotional items company that focused its work within the pharmaceutical industry. He has a deep knowledge of the manufacturing base in China and worked closely to create custom products that helped to sell and promote new and updated drugs in the market.

Jose Claudio Silva

José Cláudio Silva is a versatile Architect with experience in a wide range of Architectural sectors: Master Planning, MixUse, Office, Hospitality, Residential, Convention and Exhibition. José joined Aedas Hong Kong in December 2006. During that period he worked in the Saint Regis Hotel and Service Apartments’ Tower in Cotai Parcel 5&6, Macau. In January 2008 he moved to Aedas Singapore where he was the Team Leader for Skypark in Marina Bay Sands. Subsequently he was involved in the construction stage of “Sentosa Boardwalk”, in Singapore, and the design of “Danga Bay” Concept Master Plan in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. From 2011, he has been leading a Design Team for Projects in Indonesia, Cambodia and the Middle East. Most recently he has added Philippines to his geographical area of responsibility, from the Singapore Office.
 
Some of the Projects Jose participated were award winning, like Marina Bay Sands, Sentosa Boardwalk and MNC Mixed-Use Tower.
 

José was a frequent guest critic at Hong Kong University (HKU) and he tutored Design Studio from 2009 to 2011 at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He is frequently invited for guest critic and lectures at Universitas Pembangunan Jaya, in Jakarta. He was also a guest lecturer/speaker in several events focusing Aedas and his experience, namely in NUS in 2012 (Singapore); BCA in 2014 (Singapore); “Marcus Evans” event in 2011 (Singapore); “Trueventus” in 2014 (Jakarta), CBMM event in 2014 (Singapore); Zak World of Façade in 2017 (Jakarta).

David Hodkinson

David Hodkinson is the Co-Founder and Design Director of Studio Noor, a leading architecture and design studio with a focus on hospitality projects, based in Athens and Ho Chi Minh City.
 
Born in 1977, David studied Architecture at Oxford Brooks University in England and received his Master’s in Architecture and Interior Design from the Royal College of Art in London. After working at Glen Howells Architects, he was hired by design-led practice, Architecture PLB.
 
David’s desire to establish his own architecture and design studio brought him to Vietnam, where he met Luc Lejeune and set up Noor in 2003. At Noor, David takes the lead on significant hospitality projects for high profile clients including Raffles, Accor and Sofitel as well as a number of luxury residential properties.
David is currently working on the studio’s latest commissions: The House Hotel, Jeddah, Nusr’Et Steak House, Doha, Novikov Restaurants at Cervo Hotel and Cala di Volpe as well as the Hilton in Da Nang, Vietnam.
 
David is a dedicated, passionate architect who brings a fresh design eye to each project. His ongoing interest is to explore new materials, methods of design and building, along with a focus on high-end contemporary design. David leads a team of 10 architects and interior designers from the studio’s headquarters in Ho Chi Minh City.
David is also a furniture designer and his pieces are sold internationally.
