Brian Johnson

Managing Partner, Godwin Austen Johnson

He began his career in London in 1973 and in 1975 he moved to Dubai where he worked for a small firm for a few months before the principal announced that he was leaving Dubai resulting in him asking his old partner to join him in the establishment of a new practice in Dubai. Brian was Managing Partner of this practice until 1989 when he left to join the long-established UK practice: Godwin Austen Johnson.
 
Brian has maintained an almost constant presence in the Gulf region since 1975 and in 1991 he opened the GAJ headquarters in Dubai.
 
With more than 40 years of regional experience to his name, Brian’s influence on modern Middle Eastern architecture is undeniable. His body of work comprises some of the region’s most recognizable and prized buildings. Among them is the Dubai Creek Golf Club, widely recognized as one of Dubai’s first architectural icons – so much so that it features on the 20 dirham note. Recognized as one of the most distinguished architects in the region, Brian is credited with having set in motion a countrywide trend in the UAE to incorporate traditional Arabic and Islamic themes into modern architecture.
 
His distinctive style and uncompromising resolve for design excellence has made Brian and GAJ a preferred partner for many distinguished projects and has resulted in the firm winning an array of architectural awards.

Dr. Albert S. Fakhoury

President of CIAAD 

President of CIAAD: The Council for International Accreditation of Architecture & Design since 2017, the official partner of the United Nations for the Implementation and advancement of the UNSDGs worldwide, Dr. Albert S. Fakhoury has been the Chair of the Interior Design Department and Professor at the American University in Dubai- AUD between 2010 and 2017.
As a distinguished educator, he taught Architecture and Design courses at Notre-Dame, AUT, AUST, CLET among prestigious universities.
 
In October 2015 he was elected Executive Board Member of IFI (The International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers). Under his leadership several programs achieved academic and professional accreditation such as CIDA & NASAD. Dr. Albert S. Fakhoury is the Chair of the International Member Assistance Network at IDEC: Interior Design Educators Council since 2015.
 
He chaired and served on many International Jury Panels worldwide in recognition to his wide expertise and high academic credentials.
Dr. Albert S. Fakhoury is an illustrious keynote speaker at International venues, conferences, congresses and universities. Additionally, he chaired many International accreditation panels for the review and accreditation of Architecture and Design Programs.
 
His outstanding performance in 2016 granted him the highest of the laureates in Design when he received the International Design Award (Best Architect and Designer) for 2016.
As a leading Architect & recognized Designer, Albert S. Fakhoury contributed to many key and landmark projects in USA, Mexico, UAE, Qatar, Lebanon and Europe ranging from Hospitality to Commercial and Residential but also Urban and Landscaping Design.

Hicham Lahlou

International Designer & Regional Advisor for Africa, World Design Organization 

Hicham Lahlou, an emblematic figure of the new generation design, has been part of the new design sphere for more than two decades. His refined creations are always impregnated with cultural and identity references, subtly integrated into modern lines and it is his very personal touch that allowed him to be noticed in this environment as elitist as codified.
 
Often called as the spearhead of contemporary design in Morocco and quoted in the catalog of the exhibition The Contemporary Morocco at the institute of the Arab world (IMA) as the flag-bearer of the Moroccan national design, He has not only become a recognized design personality on the African continent and the Arab world but also one of the great signatures of the world design which signs collections for prestigious international brands, develops lines of street furniture, Sign of concepts for hotels, illustrates his talent as an artist, interior designer, product designer and graphic designer in brand identity, packaging, but also commercial architecture as well as strategic design.
 
It forged himself a name in the design of furnitures, tableware and objects by signing collections for major international brands such as DAUM, Ecart International, Lip, Aquamass, Airdiem, or Nodus Rug. A visionary who defends values of progress and undertakes actions to promote the values of design and creation in general. His creations, regularly exhibited in museums such as the Vitra Design Museum, Guggenheim Bilbao, Kunsthal Rotterdam or the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, half way between design and contemporary art make the designer a recognized artist both for his unique pencil touch and his work on the lines but also for his innovative artistic biases.
 
Highly publicized in the print media, television and digital networks, he regularly appears in prestigious publications around the world, often considered among the global leaders of the African continent, the most prominent innovators in Africa and in the world as well as guest jury in several international competitions such as the Star of Science Session 2 in Qatar as a VIP Jury.
 
The Africa Design Award & Days project (ADA & ADD), which he founded in 2014 makes him a leader in African design. In 2014, he launches ADA during the New York Forum Africa where a design panel is dedicated to him. He organized ADD as a true conductor, one of the most noted events of the year, in Morocco then in Paris. As an international design platform in Africa, Hicham Lahlou is now positioning ADA & ADD as the new hub of design on the continent to showcase a new generation of designers as well as established designers from the African continent.

Jamie Webb

 Head of MENA, Benoy

Jamie’s diverse experience spans 20 years in the UK, Asia and Middle East. Jamie has utilised his design knowledge and creativity at every stage in the development process from initial sketch to implementation and specialises in designing places to live and blending them with creative mixed use solutions incorporating workspace, education, leisure and retail. His impressive portfolio includes leading the team on the masterplanning and regeneration of the Brains Brewery site at Central Quay Cardiff where residential, workspace, education and leisure were woven around a central square and transport node. Jamie also led the masterplan and concept design for the new Al Basheer Medical City Sudan with a 700-bed hospital, Centre of Excellence and Medical School campus, and residential lifestyle district. His other notable projects include a leisure-led new mixed use development in West London, the design of the new town centre retail experience in Oxfordshire and two innovative new retail led mixed use projects in Central London. At the city scale Jamie is leading a number of large scale urban regeneration and City Districts in the UK and beyond, commercialising and animating public and private space.

Wiam Samir

As President of the World Green Building Council-affiliated Morocco Green Building Council, Wiam nurtures her passion by promoting and strengthening sustainable building knowledge and practices in Morocco. Following a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Management from Al Akhawayn University and a specialty in Environmental Management and Natural Resources followed at University of Washington, Wiam SAMIR has taken a great interest in promoting the construction sustainable. Today, she is pursuing a master degree in Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment at the University of Cambridge. In parallel, thanks to her numerous professional accreditations in the field (HQE referent, LEED AP, EDGE Auditor, Net Zero. .) Wiam accompanies every day the institutional and professional engaged in the environmental and energy performance. After working on behalf of Bymaro for two years on the Casa Finance City Tower project, Wiam joined Alto Eko, a subsidiary of Alto Ingénierie, as a project manager, driving several operations (offices, towers, hotels). luxury, housing …) at the highest levels of environmental certification.

Filippo Sona

Managing Director-Global Hospitality, Drees & Sommer

Filippo Sona is one of the most recognized names in the global hospitality consultancy community having carried out work in more than 28 countries for the past 25 years. From UK to Europe, Middle East, Africa and USA he has carried out more than 735 hospitality projects ranging from market & financial feasibilities, valuations, operator selection, project management and strategic asset management. Filippo understanding of management agreements has been an invaluable skill to global law firms as an expert witness and advisor in commercial negotiations. Filippo is a regular speaker at international hotel investment conferences and writers for many international hospitality publications. Filippo is an associate member of RICS and holds an MBA from Oxford Brooks University and an Honours Degree in Hospitality Management from the University of West London.

Hussam Chakouf

Associate, Zaha Hadid Architects

Hussam has contributed to a wide variety of competitions and projects since joining ZHA in 2006, including the Signature Towers in Dubai; the New Syrian Parliament Building in Damascus; Elk Grove Civic Center Master Plan, California, USA and the Pierres Vives project in Montpelier, France.

Hussam has BA Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of Damascus University, Syria and a Masters in Housing and Urbanism from the Architectural Association in London. He has also studied at the Architecture and Construction School, Greenwich University, London

Lahcen Haddad

Former Minister of Tourism, Morocco

Dr. Lahcen Haddad is World Bank Citizen Engagement and Social Development International Consultant. He is Vice President of Society for International Development, member of the Management Board of the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF and Toulouse Business School International Negotiation, Strategic Management and Business Environment Professor. Most recently, he became member of the Consultative Council the Middle East Travel and Tourism Network Development Centre based in the Middle East University in Jordan. He is also opinion writer for Entrepreneur and Harvard Buisness Review. Dr. Lahcen Haddad has been Minister of Tourism with the Government of Morocco between 2012 and 2016. As Minister, he oversaw the shift of Morocco towards becoming a leading destination in the Mediterranean, Africa and the Middle East and a reference country with regards to sustainable tourism. Before joining the Government in January 2012, Lahcen Haddad worked as international expert in strategic studies, democracy, governance and economic as well as human development, and as a certified expert in strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation, diversity and entrepreneurship. His involvement in programs and studies of national and international importance endowed him with a mastery of geostrategic issues, economic development, public policy, international relations and issues of governance at local and international levels. Dr. Lahcen Haddad taught as a university professor for over thirty years with institutions such as Indiana University, Saint Thomas Aquinas College in New York, the School of International Training in Vermont, Mohamed V University in Rabat and Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, the Toulouse Business School, Mundiapolis University and others. At the World Learning School of International Training, Dr. Haddad was for ten years Academic Director for the SIT Morocco Program and area thought leader for the Academic Directors community. The publications of Dr. Haddad, in English, Arabic, French and Spanish, both academic and journalese, span the topic areas of economics development, geostrategy, social sciences, development, communication and management as well as topics of general interest.

David Hodkinson

Co-Founder & Design Director

David Hodkinson is the Co-Founder and Design Director of Studio Noor, a leading architecture and design studio with a focus on hospitality projects, based in Athens and Ho Chi Minh City.

Born in 1977, David studied Architecture at Oxford Brooks University in England and received his Master’s in Architecture and Interior Design from the Royal College of Art in London. After working at Glen Howells Architects, he was hired by design-led practice, ArchitecturePLB.

David’s desire to establish his own architecture and design studio brought him to Vietnam, where he met Luc Lejeune and set up Noor in 2003.

At Noor, David takes the lead on significant hospitality projects for high profile clients including Raffles, Accor and Sofitel as well as a number of luxury residential properties.

David is currently working on the studio’s latest commissions: The House Hotel, Jeddah, Nusr’Et Steak House, Doha, Novikov Restaurants at Cervo Hotel and Cala di Volpe as well as the Hilton in Da Nang, Vietnam.

David is a dedicated, passionate architect who brings a fresh design eye to each project. His ongoing interest is to explore new materials, methods of design and building, along with a focus on high-end contemporary design. David leads a team of 10 architects and interior designers from the studio’s headquarters in Ho Chi Minh City.

David is also a furniture designer and his pieces are sold internationally.

Reda Mechiche Alami

Director of Asset Management – Global Hospitality, Drees & Sommer

Reda holds a diploma from Les Roches Swiss School of Hotel management, an MBA in business finance and project management from the University of West London, and a Certificate in Hotel Real Estate Investments and Asset Management from Cornell University. During his studies, he has engaged in many strategic assessments to develop skills in various industry sectors.

From 2003 to 2010, he has gained hospitality expertise in the luxury segment in London working for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide and D&D London with the industry pioneers. Reda’s duty was to develop the business, implement projects and manage large operations.

Thereafter, Reda went back to Morocco between 2011 till 2015 joining Madaef (ex CDG Capital Real Estate) to develop and implement asset management strategies as well as support the country vision. He was in charge for the supervision and operating performance of a portfolio of hotels in several regions in the Kingdom.

From 2015 to 2018, he has relocated to Dubai working for Colliers International MENA. As Senior Manager, Reda was handling numerous projects in Africa and the Middle East.

Reda has joined in 2018 Drees & Sommer in Dubai, a German international consulting company specialized in the building and real estate sector. As Director of Asset Management, he leads hotel investments, conduct business research and develop the corporation expansion.

Kamal Belghmi

Kamal Belghmi is the Chief Executive Officer of Bluestone Hospitality Consulting in Morocco. With over 30 years of experience in hospitality and real estate, Kamal has a wealth of expertise in the hospitality business after having held various executive positions with several Groups.

Mr. Belghmi hence founded Bluestone in order to offer his expertise and know-how to developers, investors, owners and management companies with the aim to design development studies as well as market entry and expansion strategies.

Bluestone’s services also include strategic planning for business advice related to the acquisition and renovation and/or finishing of hotel assets. Moreover, Bluestone is a partner of Knight Frank, the world’s leading real estate consulting firm and also provides business development services to several foreign companies.

Kamal Belghmi holds a dual MBA from Cornell University and ESSEC. He began his career at Banque Al Maghrib, The Moroccan Central Bank, as a Financial Analyst. He later also gained international experience with the Le Méridien in Paris and built his experience in the hospitality and tourism industry in several cities across Europe and North America.

Nabil Slitine

DHC is a Moroccan mixed-use development company founded in 2010 with a clear vision of the market requirements. It has launched the development of the exclusive “M Avenue” project in Marrakech, which includes a distinctive mix of branded luxury residences, retails, cultural center and office space in striking contemporary styling, all built around a central main avenue. Prior to DHC, Mr. Nabil Slitine has overseen several investments in various sectors within Morocco ranging from Hospitality, Entertainment, Real Estate, Services and Education. He has served as the GM of EHC Maroc SA from 2006 to 2012 during which he had successfully managed the development of the Four Seasons Marrakech from its initial inception through the completion of the development and handover to the Operator.

Wael Sheta

Executive Director Arkan Consultants

Professor Wael Sheta is the Executive Director of Arkan Consultants and Associate Professor in sustainable environmental design. Before joining Arkan Consultants team, Professor Sheta have been involved in both professional and academic life in Egypt and United Kingdom. His interests focus on the sustainable and environmental performance of buildings, including issues such as low passive energy design and environmental technology, renewable energy, sustainable architecture, thermal comfort for occupants and environmental building performance assessment. Professor Sheta hold a PhD degree in Architecture from Sheffield University, United Kingdom, and has been involved in different capacities that contributed effectively to the architectural firms, organizations, associations, and universities with which he was associated. His work in the environmental building performance and renewable energy contributes to current growing concern over the environment and the necessity to develop, for future generations, more sustainable communities that have a reduced impact particularly in developing nations.

Ivan Cornet

General Manager – North & West Africa Grit Real estate Income Group

Ivan Cornet was the managing partner of Latitude Five, a West African investment and advisory firm where he was in charge of real estate and infrastructure.

With twenty years of experience in Europe and Africa as a lawyer, an investor and a financier, Ivan has assisted international and local investors and operators active in West Africa, providing market intelligence and identifying off markets opportunities, as well as structuring commercial and financial transactions. Ivan Cornet holds a business law degree and a Master in European Business law (LL.M) from the University of Brussels as well as an INSEAD Master in Business Administration (MBA) and an Islamic Finance Qualification issued by CISI (London) and Ecole Supérieure des Affaires (Beirut).

Ivan is a Chartered Surveyor (MRICS) registered with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Ivan was also the Executive Chairman of Eburny Property Solutions, a property management firm in Côte d’Ivoire and a director of Sanctuary Student Accommodation Development, a student accommodation development and management firm in Nigeria.

Andrea Zaffaroni

Project Manager, HBA Dubai

17 years of experience of working in large scale complex integrated, high end leisure resorts projects and private villas. Excellent attention to detail and ability to successfully manage the many facets of the project. He has extensive experience on drawing production packages, project timings, budget, records and drawing protocols. Reviewing drawing packages with designers, FF&E designers and Cad operators. Working alongside Detailer and assisting with design and construction detailing. He is keen in understanding structural, MEP engineering principles as well as architecture & building fit‐out. Andrea is also involved in conceptual design, design development, documentation, coordination and ensuring high standards and protocols are applied. He has an excellent coordination with the Client, Consultant, Contractor and Supplier. He holds a Master’s degree in Architecture at “Milan Polytechnic” in Milan, Italy in 1999.
